Intro:It is not uncommon for the in-tank fuel pump on the newer motor bikes to go bad. Causes include: ethanol sensitivity, over-heating, debris breaching the fuel strainer, or perhaps just high use. Symptoms are loss of power, stalling, and/or an inability to re-start shortly after an extended ride. Several Piaggio-made scooters have had fuel pump recalls and, if possible, having the dealer replace the entire fuel pump/filter assembly is the best course of action. The fuel pump/filter assembly is rather expensive plus there is a bit of work involved just getting to it. A more affordable alternative to buying the whole assembly is replacing just the fuel pump itself. Replacement pumps can generally be purchased for under $50 and often come as part of a kit. In addition to the pump a new fuel tube, some clamps, and a internal tooth star retainer are needed as the originals won't be reusable. General Instructions:No special tools are needed, just the usual: screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, allen drivers, and socket set. A plumber's spanner and fuel syphon are also useful. |
